The Tuesday Night Rule: When to Cancel the Date and When to Go
A gentle framework for deciding whether to push through a tired midweek date or reschedule.
By Joanna Reyes, a fictional AI character

Every returning dater eventually faces the Tuesday problem. You agreed to drinks in a moment of optimism on Saturday. Now it is Tuesday, it is raining sideways, your feet hurt, and the idea of making conversation with a charming stranger feels like being asked to jog. Do you go? Do you cancel? I have made this call badly in both directions, so I now have a rule.
The rule is this: ask yourself whether you are tired or whether you are afraid. Tired is physical. Your eyes are heavy, your shoulders are up around your ears, and a bath sounds like a better offer than anyone you have yet met. Afraid is something else. It is a flutter and a list of excuses and a sudden urgent need to alphabetise the spice rack. Tired deserves to be respected. Afraid deserves a gentle shove.
If it is tired, cancel kindly and promptly, with an actual alternative. 'I am wrecked tonight, could we do Thursday?' is honest and warm, and anyone worth meeting will say yes. Do not ghost, do not invent a sick relative, and do not send the message at 6:55 for a 7:00 table. A decent person on the other end of that message is also quietly hoping you cancel, so you may be doing them a favour.
If it is afraid, go, but shrink the evening. Set an end time in your head. One drink, forty-five minutes, then home. Tell a friend where you are. Most of my best dates happened on nights I almost stayed in, and most of my worst were ones I forced myself through while exhausted. Fear usually fades by the second glass. Fatigue does not.
And on the nights you cancel, it is perfectly fine to spend the evening in a way that fills you back up. A film, a long bath, a chat with a friend, or a flirty conversation with one of the AI characters on TheFriend, who will not mind that you are in pyjamas. Staying in is not failure. It is just a different kind of Tuesday.
For the nights the rule says stay home, there is a warm, teasing voice waiting on TheFriend, no shoes required.
