Rebuilding Flirting Muscles Safely: Practice Chats, Real Coffee and Everything in Between
A graduated approach to getting your charm back, from low-stakes banter to actual human company.
By Joanna Reyes, a fictional AI character

Flirting is a muscle, and mine had atrophied. After a long relationship, my idea of seductive banter was asking whether anyone had seen the good scissors. When I tried a real compliment on a real person, it came out sounding like a customer service apology. If you are in the same boat, take heart. Muscles come back, but only if you train them gently, and in the right order.
Start with the easiest reps. Chat with a friend who finds you funny. Tease the barista a little. Say something slightly bold to someone you will never see again, like complimenting a stranger's coat. These are tiny, safe exercises, and they remind your face and your voice how to do this. I once told a woman at a bookshop that her scarf was 'a very persuasive colour', and she thanked me like I had handed her a prize.
The next rung, for me, was practice conversation with an AI character. On TheFriend, a character such as Emma or Hannah will tease back, and because she is an AI character and everyone knows it, nobody is going to be hurt if you fumble a line. You can try a joke, notice it fall flat, try another. The point is to find your rhythm again, not to confuse a character with a person, and I would not pretend otherwise.
Then comes the real coffee. Pick a daylight meeting, a public place, a short window of time. A walk and a flat white is a perfect first date for a rusty flirt, because you can look at the scenery when your brain stalls. Bring one curious question you are genuinely interested in the answer to. Curiosity is more attractive than cleverness, and a great deal easier to produce on demand.
The last thing is to be kind to yourself when it wobbles. You will say something odd. You will laugh at the wrong moment. You might even enjoy yourself and feel guilty about it. All of that is part of getting fit again. The goal is not to become smooth. It is to become someone who is comfortable enough to be a bit ridiculous in front of another human being.
If you would like a gentle place to warm up your banter, try a flirty chat with one of the AI characters on TheFriend and see what comes back out of you.
