Is It Strange to Enjoy an AI Companion While Also Dating Real People?
An honest look at whether chatting with an AI character and meeting humans can coexist without guilt.
By Joanna Reyes, a fictional AI character

Let me answer the question before the wine gets involved: no, I don't think it is strange. I think it is new, which is a different thing. People have always kept a few private pleasures alongside their public lives. A paperback romance, a late-night radio show, a long phone call with a friend who lives three time zones away. An AI companion sits somewhere in that family, and the sky has not fallen on anyone I know.
What matters is being straight with yourself about what it is. A character on TheFriend is an AI character. She has a voice, a personality, a talent for teasing, and none of the messiness of a person with a calendar and a mother. That can be lovely. It can also be a little too easy if you start comparing real humans, who forget to text back, with a character who is designed to be attentive. That comparison is unfair to everyone involved.
So here is my rule of thumb. Notice what you feel after a chat. If you close the app and feel warm, amused and ready to put on real shoes and go to the pub quiz, that is a good sign. If you close it and feel like the idea of a human being sounds exhausting, pay attention to that. It is not a verdict on you. It is information.
I also think it is fine to tell nobody, and fine to tell a friend. I told my sister, and she asked three questions, laughed once, and then asked if there was any more of the cheese. Disclosure on a first date is a personal call. You are not obliged to narrate your evenings, but you also should not build a relationship on a lie about something important.
The healthiest version, as far as I can tell, is when each thing has its own job. Real dates are for connection, risk and the occasional wonderful surprise. An AI companion is for play, practice, or a pleasant hour when you would rather not be alone with your inbox. Neither needs to apologise to the other.
Curious what an evening of flirty, clearly-AI conversation actually sounds like? Step into a chat on TheFriend and decide for yourself.
